Arsenic in apple juice…

During a recent episode of The Dr. Oz show I learned that there is a MAJOR problem with our apple juice. 60% of our apple juice concentrate comes from China. As you know, the farmers spray the apples with pesticides. What you may not know is that some of those pesticides contain arsenic. The US has responsible outlawed pesticides that contain arsenic. Additionally, China’s water supply has a higher level of arsenic than the United States. Once we get the apple concentrate, we add our water to it, which contains a small (safe) level of arsenic. Each of these sources of arsenic are relatively safe, but when you put the three together it makes the product unsafe. Arsenic is a heavy metal known to cause cancer and decreased IQ levels.

Now, don’t freak out! Drinking a few juice boxes with high levels of arsenic will most likely NOT cause a problem. The real harm is in chronic exposure.

Dr. Oz hired an independent research group to conduct a study on the arsenic levels in apple juice. The study included three cities and three dozen samples. The results of the study are astounding!

As most of you know there are small amounts of arsenic in our drinking water. The EPA has determined a safe level of arsenic for our drinking water, which is under 10 parts per billion. Unfortunately, the FDA has no regulation on the amount of arsenic that can be in our apple juice.  Since 10 parts per billion is considered safe for drinking water, Dr. Oz used that same number in his study.

Brands to avoid

One third of the apple juice tested by the independent research group had levels of arsenic above 10 parts per billion.  These four brands had levels between 3 and 36. I recommend steering clear of these brands: Apple & Eve, Mott’s, Juicy Juice and Gerber.

Take action today!

As I watched the devastating episode on the Dr. Oz show, I wondered – What can I do? Here are three things that you can do today.

  1. Check the labels. Avoid apple juice that came from China. Some labels will say “Apple concentrate from China”.
  2. Drink organic apple juice. The organic apple juice that was tested had levels of arsenic below 10 parts per billion, which is safe.
  3. Contact these companies and express your concern.
  4. Share this information with your loved ones.

Allow me to repeat myself: Don’t freak out! Drinking a few juice boxes with high levels of arsenic will most likely NOT cause a problem. The real harm is in chronic exposure.  Take action today! Follow through with the above four action items. Sleep well tonight knowing that you proved that you cherish your health and the health of your loved ones. You are a responsible American.
